The ComicDC distribution server is used to deliver contents with the BookSurfing solution for NTT DoCoMo FOMA (90xi, 70xi series).
With the implementation of ComicDC, clients do not have to install their own dedicated servers and viewers while end users can enjoy various contents with a single viewer, thus benefiting from the enhanced usability.
In the FOMA i-mode service, there is a limit to the “scratch pad” size, the storage space accessible by the i-appli; and it is impossible to download a large volume of content at a time. Therefore, there is the need for regular communication with the server during the content browsing. In addition, FOMA requires distribution of the i-appli and contents from the same server to ensure security. This means that it would be necessary to establish a system where each client who delivers contents prepares a viewer dedicated to BookSurfing from, and users download contents from the servers of the respective clients.
It takes time and efforts as well as large expenses to install systems individually to support the distribution for FOMA. If content providers offer viewers individually, there would be many different viewers in the same terminal used by an end user. It is not convenient for end users to view contents in such an environment.
With ComicDC, however, end users are able to browse contents delivered by content providers through a single viewer. On the other hand, clients can be free from work to install and improve their server systems and to keep up with the rapid progress of mobile phones. CELSYS will continue to enhance the servers and incorporate new technologies speedily along with the rapidly developing mobile phone business.
