Celsys is researching and developing e-book solutions using AI (machine learning, deep learning, etc.) to support the delivery and production of e-book comics, aiming to improve the experience of comic book authors and readers alike. As the initial stage of its research, Celsys has released the “Clip Studio Reader Lab,” where users can experience AI-assisted technologies for detecting panels and characters’ faces within a manga page.
Clip Studio Reader Lab
Research was done on detecting panels within the pages of a manga to efficiently compile data on how to display works vertically panel-by-panel. This is the optimal way to read manga in a vertically scrolling format, typified by the webtoon format, which has attracted attention recently as a way to effectively display manga drawn on a page.

The research focused on detecting the faces of characters and other figures depicted in manga, allowing for more effective presentation by locating the characters’ faces, which are important elements in the works.

For nearly 20 years, Celsys has provided e-book viewers and publishing tools that support a wide range of display formats, including vertical scroll and panel-by-panel display formats. This research is expected to be utilized to facilitate the production of e-books and enhance the reading experience. It is also believed that further research will contribute to the improvement of features for readers, including the ability to search for specific characters when browsing works, as well as facilitating data analysis, including studying trends in hit works.
Celsys plans to continue developing content viewers that are easily customized and maintained and expand the possibilities for content creation using the latest technology.
